So... you wanna know what worked for me and how you can make it work for you eh ?
Well... If you're a new low carber you may not like what I have to say and if you're a more experienced low carber you may not want to accept that eventually it might come down to this.
I know I didn't.
** PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT A DIETITION. THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION OF ANY
PARTICULAR DIET, IT IS A REPRESENTATION OF WHAT WORKED FOR ME.
- Stay away from legal treats.
- Stay away from low carb replacement foods like low carb bars (which are full of glycerine and can stall you) and all the other stuff you can get that is labeled "low carb".
- Don't waste a lot of time trying to replicate high carbs foods. They never taste the same as the real thing.
- Accept that there are certain things that you just CANT eat anymore and move on.
- Stick to the basics. Meat, veggies, water, water, water, good oils like olive oil, eggs, small amounts of dairy (if you tolerate it), nuts & lower carb fruits in moderation, and your supplements.
I started out low carbing just like everyone else. Atkins was my plan of choice and I did well at first. Eventually I stopped losing and couldn't figure out why. All the while I was making and enjoying my cream cheese desserts, my cheese loaded special meals, and almonds and strawberries with whipping cream. Heck I'd even have whipping cream with Kahluha Davinci Flavored Syrup !! But I was under my carb limit..... WHY wasnt' I still losing weight ?????
Here is a very important piece of advice I have for you. Take it and use it - you'll be glad you did.
*** It is just as important WHERE your carbs come from as how many you have.***
Ideally most of your carbs should be coming from your veggies !! Dousing them in olive oil ensures you'll get in enough fat to keep you satiated.
Did I come to the above opinions all at once ? Nah - of course not. I've been at this since May of 98.
Low Carb is an ever changing journey. In the beginning I would never have imagined I could give up dairy. But I did it. When I contemplated anti-yeast it seemed so huge - it wasn't.
What I'm trying to say is that every low carber goes through stages: Resentment, Anger, Denial, Bargaining, Acceptance etc....
You resent that the "skinny" neighborlady that can stuff her face with Milky Way bars without getting fat and that makes you angry. We hit denial and say to ourselves "oh I'll never have to give up dairy or nuts, or whatever - that won't be me". Then we start to bargain a bit - well I can't have this so I'm entitled to a little extra of that. Eventually we accept that these dietary changes are best for us and it becomes second nature (hopefully).
All this happens over time and generally most low carbers must learn for themselves (I did). I hope you can take some of what I have listed above to heart and make it work for you though.
Happy Low Carbing :-)
