Hidden Carbs
Here is how you can take a product label and figure out the TRUE carb content for yourself. Here is the formula for calculating if a product label is accurate using my favorite pet peeve product - those nasty glycerine loaded low carb protein bars.... :-)
Fat has 9 calories per gram Multiply the number of fat grams listed on the package label times 9 Multiply the # of carb grams listed times 4 Multiply the # of protein grams times 4 Add up the numbers you come up with. This will be the number of total calories. Now compare this with what the label says the calories are. If the numbers are close then the label is fairly accurate. If the calories listed on the product label are higher than what you calculated then there are hidden carbs somewhere in that product. Subtract the products listed calores from your number and divide the difference by 4. This will give you the number of hidden carbs.
Here's an example: It's the label from a Protein Revolution Bar (Also marketed as Carb Solutions - sold at Wal-Mart & Kmart)
Low Glycemic Tech.
Nutrition Facts
Amount Total Calories 230 Calories From Fat 70 Total Fat 8 g 12% Saturated Fat 1 g 5% Cholesterol 5 mg 2% Sodium 180 mg Glycerine 13 g Total Carbohydrates 2.5 g 1% Dietary Fiber 0 g 0% Sugars 0 g Protein 22 g This product contains glycerine which is not a carbohydrate but has 4.32 calories per gram. Do the calculations:
8 grams fat times 9 = 72 calories Total calories = 170 calories. But the label says 230 calories 230 minus 170 = 60 unaccounted for calories. 60 divided by 4 equals 15 hidden grams of carbs in this bar !!! Bringing the total carb count to 17.5 NOT 2.5 as the label says. You can reach me here... conniems@conniems.com |
